Tips for preventing flood and storm damage
According to the National Flood Insurance program flooding is the most common natural disaster in the United States causing $2.7 billion in losses between 2001 and 2010. Flooding is not covered by most homeowner’s insurance policies so it may be necessary to buy a separate flood policy for your home.
Here are a couple of tips to keep water from entering your home during a heavy rain event:
1. Fix foundation leaks that may allow water to enter your home.
2. Make sure your roof is secure and protected.
3. Clear gutters and drains
If water ever floods your home, getting someone on site as soon as possible is key to keeping the amount of damage to a minimum. SERVPRO of Macon is ready to respond at any time and also provides a free assessment and estimate. Call us at (478) 474-6700.
Professional Water Removal
A hidden water leak in a bathroom
A hidden water leak in your bathroom, if left untreated, can cost you, especially if it leads to serious damage to walls, flooring, and paint. There are subtle signs you can look for in your home to figure out if you need a plumber to fix those leaking fixtures and pipes before things get worse. When you have a massive leak, you need a certified remediation company to help you clean up the damage, such as SERVPRO.
One sign of a hidden leak and the need for professional water removal is a wall which has blistering wallpaper or paint. Most of the time, steam from hot showers in your home should not cause this to happen. When water and moisture get between the paint and the wall, they stop the bond and start to separate the two, making the paint rise from the wall and fall off in bits. It is the same case with wallpaper.
A wall which is warped or stained for no apparent reason is a clear sign of a plumbing leak. Drywall becomes soft and starts to bubble when it is exposed to moisture, eventually warping and breaking up into pieces. If the leak reaches your ceiling, it will sag and could leak some of the accumulated water, causing more damage to your bathroom.
At SERVPRO, our technicians have tools like moisture meters to find any hidden moisture and leaks in your bathroom and to remove any accumulation of water from those leaks. We first figure out what is causing the leak, fix the problem, and eliminate the water with industrial pumps, fans, and dehumidifiers. Quickly drying your bathroom is important to avoid the growth of mold. Once your bathroom is dry again, repairs are made, including replacing any damaged drywall, and the affected area is sanitized.
Sometimes your flooring can be damaged as well if the leak was bad enough, causing cracking, staining or buckling. Moisture can make your floor feel soft or spongy depending upon the material it is made of. In these cases, you often find a damp subfloor as well. If the problem is found quick enough, we can dry it out and salvage it without having to replace it, but we may need to put new subflooring in as well where the water damaged it.
Don’t hesitate to contact SERVPRO of Macon when you believe you have a hidden leak in your bathroom. We are available to help you at any time if you need us, please call (478) 474-6700.

Fire Restoration 101
A fire disaster can cause serious damage to your house
A fire disaster can cause serious damage to your house. The resultant flames, smoke, heat, and even water can have permanent repercussions on the structure and many of your items. The contents that survive fire damage may sustain extensive smoke damage in exchange. The firefighters may also cut holes in the walls or roof when putting out the flames, leaving you with a massive cleanup job.
Time and patience are crucial when dealing with any form of fire damage. Once the fire fighting crew leaves, SERVPRO can come in and initiate the restoration process. We have highly skilled, IICRC-trained technicians that are on standby in case of an emergency. Using special smoke cleanup and restoration techniques, we can restore your property to preloss conditions, "Like it never even happened."
When the fire calms down, the resultant smoke damage appears in the form of discolored walls, charred items, or soot and ash on the floor. In some cases, other side effects such as smells can remain behind, presenting health risks to the occupants. It is important to keep in mind that some signs of smoke damage can show almost immediately while others take several hours (sometimes days) after the event to manifest.
Within a few days of smoke and fire damage, walls and flooring may turn yellow (although this yellowing effect does not show right away). Warping and discoloration can also occur on wood and plastic surfaces/appliances. Metal hardware tends to rust and corrode away several hours after a fire. If you have tiles, counter tops, or any other surface with porous stone such as travertine, granite, or marble, the acidic residue in soot can cause them to discolor permanently.
Certain surfaces, especially fabric items, may show both visible signs of fire damage and smoke odor. Smoke releases tiny carbon particles into the air that, when deposited, are known as soot. The first step SERVPRO takes to reduce the smell of a fire is getting rid of this smoke deposit or soot.
In addition to these tiny particles, smoke also contains various components that contribute to the unbearable smell that lingers after fire damage. These include toxic gases and vapors. Vapors are misty droplets that can be poisonous upon absorption or inhalation. Toxic gases come in different forms. Carbon monoxide is the most common toxic gas in a fire disaster. Household products such as plastics, vinyl, and other materials containing chlorine produce phosgene during combustion. Carpets, synthetics, clothing, and carpets release hydrogen cyanide when burning.
The smell that follows smoke damage penetrates different materials after some time. Unless a professional fire damage restoration company cleans up and deodorizes these items properly, the smoky smell may remain for a long time. SERVPRO technicians can pinpoint the source of the odor and neutralize it accordingly.
Do not leave your property to fate when a fire disaster comes knocking. SERVPRO of Macon is a part of your community and can arrive promptly to reverse the fire damage. Call us anytime at (478) 474-6700!

Why YOU Should Check Your Smoke Detector
Have you ever taken the batteries out of that annoying beeping smoke detector in your home? I know I have, and I’m sure you may have done that before too. However, this could be very dangerous if you don’t replace the batteries and make sure your smoke alarm is working properly.
This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign is “Don’t Wait – Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years!”
The National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) survey data shows that the public has many misconceptions about smoke alarms, which may put them at increased risk in the event of a home fire. For example, only a small percentage of people know how old their smoke alarms are, or how often they need to be replaced. NFPA focuses on these key messages:
•Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years.
•Make sure you know how old all the smoke alarms are in your home.
•To find out how old a smoke alarm is, look at the date of manufacture on the back of the alarm; the alarm should be replaced 10 years from that date.
Here’s how to check:
1Remove the smoke alarm from the wall/ceiling.
2Look at the back of the alarm for the date of manufacture
3Smoke alarms should be replaced 10 years from the date of manufacture
4Put the alarm back on the ceiling/wall if it is less than 10 years old.
•Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including the basement. Larger homes may need more alarms. For the best protection, make sure all smoke alarms are interconnected. When one sounds, they all sound.
•Test smoke alarms at least once a month by pushing the test button
•If the smoke alarm sounds, get outside/ go to your outside meeting place
•A closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat & fire
•Call the fire department from a cell phone or neighbor’s phone. Stay outside until the fire department says it’s safe to go back inside.
•Practice your home fire drill twice a year. Conduct one at night and one during the day with everyone in your home, and practice different ways out.
•Teach children how to escape on their own in case you can't help.
•Make sure the number on your home is clearly marked and easy fo rht fire department to find.
•Once you get outside, stay outside. Never go back inside a burning building.
This week is an also an opportunity for local firefighters to visit schools and teach children the importance of fire safety. They want to make sure you’re doing all you can to keep your family safe. Firefighters are also encouraging smokers to make sure they throw out butts and ashes correctly because it only takes something small to spark a fire if the conditions are dry.

Your Macon Business May Be Put Out of Business if You're Dealing with Commercial Water Damage
Finding a dripping line at the water fountain or a leaky toilet can seem like no big deal, but in reality, this can be a sign that your commercial site has suffered water damage. While it may be hidden, rotting floorboards and damp walls can create problems that might not be easily visible yet. These details need to be taken care of immediately.
How a Small Leak can Lead to Major Water Damage
A small leak can allow water to slowly seep into cracks around toilets, or along seams in floor coverings such as carpets or tile, and seep into the underlay of these floors. Water is a fluid that can quickly spread over time, thinly covering support systems underneath upper floors, without ever seeping through to the ceiling below. Commercial water damage in Macon businesses can be quite invisible for a long time before it is visible on the exterior of walls, ceilings, or floors. Hiding this way can allow damage to take place slowly. Massive leaks or those that happen outside of regular business hours and remain undetected, leading to standing water, can seem worse, but sometimes, the clean-up process is easier. This is because the problem may have been noticed much sooner, simply because it was apparent more quickly.
Some of this damage can be mold growth, as mold is present in practically all indoor environments, and no business is not immune to this. Most air filtration units available to the public are not 100% effective, even with HEPA filters installed, meaning some mold is still present, just in lower amounts. Moisture in the environment in the wrong place can allow these errant mold spores to grow.
Another type of damage that can happen are rotting beams and other support structures below your floors. Walls can also become affected by water that runs along their interiors, crumbling drywall, and allowing mold to grow prolifically. Carpeting can also become saturated underneath, on the padding side, and remain undetected for extensive lengths of time. Our SERVPRO of Macon professionals know how to stop this damage and get your business back to its original and safe state.
What do We Do?
We use high-powered pumps to extract any standing water, and if there is merchandise that could suffer damage from the humidity levels, we will pack up and remove these items to an off-site location. Sometimes, our technicians need the space occupied by your merchandise so it will be packed up to allow for us to work more efficiently and finish the job at hand.
After extracting any standing water, we will inspect for damages and advise you of repairs, restorative cleaning, or replacements that are needed to get things back to normal for your commercial site. We can complete a detailed inventory of damaged items and those that can be salvaged so you can present this to your insurance company.
Airing out is never enough when there is water damage of any type. Commercial dehumidifiers and water extraction equipment must be used. Monitoring the moisture and humidity levels on at least a daily basis shows how well dehumidification efforts are, and our professionals are trained and certified in IICRC techniques. This means that if drying techniques are not working as quickly as they should be, we know how to alter them, so the drying process meets ours and your expectations.

Do I Have Mold?
Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:
•Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
•Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
•Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
•Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
•Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
•Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.
If you suspect that your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

What you could see after fire damage to your property
Fire damage is caused by the actually fire. This can include damage to the structure of the property. Often materials are melted and can ignite other materials with this type of damage.
Fire damage can also cause different toxins to react causing explosions or they can act as accelerant spreading the flames and causing additional damage.
Water damage is always present with fire damage because the flames have to be extinguished. Often the damage caused by the sprinklers in a building is much more significant than the initial fire damage.
Soot from a fire can be found in every room of a house that has been badly burned, even those rooms that were not burnt. Often homeowner's belongings, furniture, clothes in drawers, important documents, paintings, and more are completely covered in charcoal black soot. Some items are not salvageable and the items that are have to be properly cleaned or the soot can permanently destroy them.
After experiencing a house fire the water damage has to be professionally handled, because when it is not properly dried mold can grow. Mold is a toxin that can cause numerous potential health problems for those living in the property. It is important to make sure the water damage is taken care of by professionals like those at SERVPRO of Macon.

This will then allow us to come up with a good plan of action for addressing the damage and for restoring your building. Often the extent of the damage might be more severe than it appears on the face of it – for instance if mold is accruing in another room as a result of water damage, or if smoke got into an adjoining part of the building. SERVPRO of Macon will use sensors and other tools to accurately assess the damage.
When our company deals with commercial restoration we will go about sealing any leaks and preventing any further damage that could occur as a result of these issues. This might mean repairing a pipe or tarping a roof or it might mean adding a temporary measures to secure the premises while we work.
Anything that cannot be salvaged will then be disposed of to make space and other items might be moved out temporarily as well. As commercial restoration specialists we will then be able to begin removing any water using large pumps and then to start cleaning the affected surfaces using equipment such as air scrubbers. Anything that is damp will need to be dried thoroughly to prevent the spread of mold, while sanitization will also be necessary for health reasons.
Once everything is cleaned and moved out and the building is sealed, commercial restoration will then involve the repair and remodeling of various rooms. This may mean installing new fittings such as bathrooms and kitchens, it might mean replacing individual items such as cabinets or repainting the walls and re-carpeting.
Ultimately, commercial restoration done by SERVPRO of Macon can provide a wide variety of different services which together can help to clean and restore a property after it has been affected by a storm, flood, fire or any other type of damage. - Fire is deadly! Fire uses up oxygen you need to breathe.
You can always be prepared to prevent deadly fires in your home. Just taking a few precautions can help save you and your family.
These fire facts were found on www.ready.gov!
How do I know if I have mold?
One of the many questions SERVPRO of Macon gets on a regular basis is “How do I know if I have mold?” Mold requires moisture and a food source to grow such as wallpaper, drywall or other organic building materials. In most cases, mold grows from having high humidity in your home or business, a non-ventilated bathroom or a recent water loss. However, if you believe that you do have mold growing in your home or business it is best to have a qualified environmental lab take samples. An environmental lab will be able to explain the testing process and provide results based off of the samples taken from your home. Based off of those results, they provide recommendations on how the mold would need remediation. Then, SERVPRO can take those results and recommendations to properly remediate the home or business of any microbial growth
What you need to know about tornadoes
Tornadoes are known to cause widespread damage throughout the United States, especially in the Southern Plains and SouthEast. But how much do we truly know about these destructive entities that tear through our homes and businesses?
Here are a couple of quick facts about tornadoes:
The average tornado travels Southwest to Northeast but have been known to move in any direction.
Tornadoes are most likely to occur between 3pm and 9pm but can occur at any time.
Dr. T. Theodore Fujita devised the F0-F5 Scale for tornadoes in 1971.
In 2006 the National Weather Service unveiled the Enhanced Fujita Scale (EF Scale).
A tornado normally appears transparent until it picks dust and mud from the ground.
The USA averages around 1,200 tornadoes every year, more than any other country.
In the southern hemisphere tornadoes usually rotate in a clockwise direction. In the northern hemisphere tornadoes usually rotate in a counterclockwise direction.
Signs of Danger
We are in the peak of tornado season here in Alabama and encourage everyone to be weather aware. Have a family plan in the event of a tornado warning. Know where your safe areas are wherever you are.
Protect your property against storm damage
Whether there is heavy rain, freezing temperatures, damaging winds, or sleet and snow; all of these can cause property damage. You can't control Mother Nature but you can be prepared so here are some tips to help you:
-Check for tree limbs and branches that might have fallen.
-Roofs, pipes and gutters should all be inspected and make sure they are in proper working order. Clear gutters from debris, a damming effect could cause roof damage or interior water problems. Downspouts should be facing away from the home or building.
-Clean your chimneys and exhaust systems from debris.
-Test your gas lines for leaks.
-Inspect your property for proper drainage.
-Protect pipes from freezing by allowing water to drip when temperatures dip below freezing. If any pipes are under cabinets leave the cabinets open. Make sure exterior pipes are properly insulated.
-If there are any outdoor faucets, you might want to shut the water off.
-Make sure all exterior doors and windows have sufficient weather stripping.

Storm Damage Restoration
This storm damaged home was the result of high winds blowing down a large tree across the roof. There was extensive damage to the roof and walls.
Sometimes unexpected things happen to our homes. One of these can be a tree falling thru our roof in the middle of the night due to a storm. When this happens, our team is available 24/7 to respond.
One of the major concerns is secondary damage such as rain. If a tree falls thru the roof and leaves a big opening you could be looking at a very expensive restoration project versus the initial damage. I is important to get a temporary cover on the roof or side of the house that is damaged.
It is important to have adequate manpower to extract the water immediately but also make sure that additional water does not come in. Once the water is extracted, the drying process can begin. We have large commercial desiccant dehumidifiers designed for climate control in large facilities.
If you have any questions about Large Loss capabilities, contact SERVPRO of Macon at 478-474-6700 24 hours a day.http://www.SERVPROmaconwest.com/

Move Outs – When the structure has suffered extensive damage, the cleanup and restoration process may need to be facilitated by relocating the contents for cleaning, deodorization and storage while structural repairs are being completed. A supervised moving crew can carefully pack and move the entire contents of your home or office and move them into our secure facilities.
Contents Cleaning – All of the restorable contents in affected areas will be professionally cleaned and deodorized. This includes area rugs, furniture, draperies and upholstery. SERVPRO of Macon technicians begin by carefully inspecting and testing all fabrics in the structure to determine which cleaning methods are most appropriate. SERVPRO of Macon can provide wet or dry cleaning. Additionally, all the other restorable contents will be cleaned and deodorized to as near as pre loss condition as possible. This includes electronics, art, wood furniture, kitchen items, clothing, bedding, bric-a-brac and much more.

Macon Fire Safety Tips
The winter season is here. Even though Macon usually has mild winters, there is still a need for heating homes or businesses at some point during the winter months.
Remember these tips when heating your Macon home or business:
- Keep anything flammable at least three feet away from heating equipment, like the furnace, fireplace, wood stove, or a portable space heater. Have a three foot "kid-free" zone around open fires and space heaters.
- Make sure the fireplace has a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying into the room. Ashes should be completely cooled before putting them in a metal container. Keep the container a safe distance away from the home.
- Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.
- Always us the right kind of fuel, specified by the manufacturer, for fuel burning space heaters.
- Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional.
- Have a qualified professional install stationary space heating equipment, water heaters or central heating equipment according to the local codes and manufacturer's instructions.
- Test smoke alarms monthly.
